Players on the DL: A Valuable Art in the Fantasy World
I am an avid believer that fantasy baseball is an art! From using multi position players, to your research, to pick ups and trades...but I have found one way to expand my roster and stash players from other prospecting managers...the DL!!! Even if you don't have any intentions of keeping the player on the DL, you keep him from other managers. This is when you can take chances on players that may have been playing hurt, or underachieving...all the while they aren't hurting your stats because they are resting, recovering, or rehabbing.
The leagues I play in allow managers to place players on the DL, opening another roster spot for your team! Everyone usually has a player or two that are expendable, you drop that player and add the player who is on the DL, then you place the player on the DL and then you can pick up another player who is on fire at that point in the season...and that is how you get the 2 for 1...I am the master of the 2 for 1, this season alone I have added Andruw Jones on the DL, while with the open roster spot gaining Kevin Slowey...before his last two starts! Earlier this season when Fausto Carmona went on the DL I added Jair Jurrjens. I think these moves have worked out really well for my team...and with Andruw Jones tearing the cover off the baseball down at AAA it has me very happy with the prospects of adding a healthy Andruw Jones to an outfield of Grady Sizemore, Nick Markakis, Ryan Braun, Ryan Church, and Jay Bruce!
I learned alot from the character Worm in the movie Rounders...looking for the angles and edges to help yourself in fantasy sports is a must...especially if you want to be competetive!

I used to love stashing
I used to love stashing people away on the DL. I'd pretty much pick up anyone I could and throw them on the DL, just in hopes that they would be decent in their return and I could fill a need.
But, the main leagues I'm in have since changed the rules. We now only allow DL players to be picked up during the draft, but if a player is on the DL and is on the waiver wire/free agent, he can't be picked up until after he's activated.
I'll be honest, I don't really mind the rule change anymore. I used to hate it. But, in a deep league there's typically not really anyone available on the DL as a free agent anyway. If they're worth anything, they're just kept on the roster as a DL player (we have unlimited DL spots).
I can definately see where this would be an advantage in a shallow mixed league.
