First Big Name To Fall...
C.C. Sabathia is the first name to fall as the trade deadline is rapidly approaching! Did the Brewers give up too much of the farm for a guy that could end up right back in Cleveland at the end of the year? Matt Laporta has absolutely destroyed the baseball and was probably going to be in the bigs as early as opening day next season, or a call up in May - July! The Brewers also gave up two of their top arms on the farm in Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson...and rumor has it they are also going to be sending Taylor Green, their Minor League player of the year from 2007.
I see the Cleveland Indians turning into the Florida Marlins...sell your studs and raid teams farm systems...most of the young stud players playing for the Marlins have come from the Yankees and Red Sox farm systems...the funny thing about it all is that Cleveland may have the last laugh if they can re-sign C.C. in the off season...

Brewing something bad...
I'm not a big fan of this trade. I think they gave up too much! You know my thoughts on "can't miss" prospects, but to give up LaPorta and 2 other good prospects for a player they know they won't be able to sign in the offseason is just rediculous.
Based on their current roster and farm system, dealing LaPorta does make some sense. He's a big time prospect and can (obviously) draw in some big time talent in a trade. But you'd hope it would be for a quality player that could help the Brewers out for more than 3 months. Sure, there's not a whole lot of names in the list above that meet those criteria, but seems like they'd be able to pull it off if they wanted to.
2 recent trades come to mind when I think about this trade:
1. Salty (& Company) from ATL to TEX for Teixera. Here's what ATL did right: They got a quality bat that they could use for a while for some high quality prospects. I'd say they did a great job in boosting up Salty's hype by pulling him up early and then dealing him. Salty owners now will probably admit that he needed more time in AA and/or AAA, and still doesn't quite look completely ready for the bigs. But, overall, good deal. TEX got good prospects, ATL got a bat they could use for more than a playoff run.
2. Let's go way back to 2002 for this one: CLE gives up Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew to MTL for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Lee Stevens. OK, pull out Drew and Stevens and look at that trade again. Wow. Same scenario we're seeing today with MIL. Top prospects for a great pitcher. Now, Colon went off that year and was a great pickup (he went 20-8 with a 2.93 ERA), but by the time spring training came along he was already in a White Sox uniform! No championship for the Expos, and 3 of today's fantasy studs for the Indians. It didn't make sense then, and it doesn't make sense now!
A Name Falls that wasn't on my List...
Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin were sent to the Windy City...The Chicago Cubs made a move today that I almost wonder if it was a reaction...or in the works...is it another Billy Bean move? I honestly believe that Billy Bean made a mistake in this one...Harden and Gaudin have been some of his best pitchers...does he have some arms in triple A or double A that we don't know about...because after trading those two who is left...Eric Patterson, and Matt Murton are role players...Murton has alot more upside...but honestly what does Sean Gallagher have to offer the Oakland Athletics...this is the most questionable trade of Billy Bean's era!!!

Disagree...Beane got it right...Cubs Falter!
I guess I'm just bashing the NL Central today. For full disclosure, I'll throw out there that I'm a huge Cubs fan.
I think Beane got it right. He's ready to re-tool, so he picks up some good prospects for a couple of pitchers. Murton has a lot of potential, but never really got a fair shot with the Cubs; Re-read that sentence and insert Patterson for Murton. As far as Gallagher goes, he was more than decent last year, and in my opinion deserved to be in the Cubs rotation all year. By the way, anyone notice that the A's have a pretty good track record of turning mediocre NL pitchers into pretty good AL pitchers recently (Haren, Eveland)?
The Cubs, however, missed the boat here. Gaudin looks to be the better fit for the organization. He's been good, and isn't a huge injury risk. Speaking of injury risks, isn't it time for another Harden trip to the DL? Did the Cubs really just get another injury prone pitcher with potential CY Young caliber stuff with hopes that he'd anchor their rotation into the playoffs and bring a championship back to the Cubs for the first time in a century? Seems like the Cubs have been trying this for the past few years (insert Wood and Prior comments/groans here). I guess it's hard to get away from old habits. But, at least they finally dealt away Murton and Patterson. They'd obviously given up on them a long time ago. You just wonder if they'd stuck with Murton a bit longer this year that perhaps his value would have increased enough to the point that they could have kept Gallagher. Keeping Gallagher and adding Harden & Gaudin...I'd say the Cubs do good. As it is, I'm not a big fan.
BUT GO CUBS! WIN IT ALL!!
