USA Today Ranks Top 10 College Stadiums
A recent USA Today article listed their top 10 places to "stand and cheer college football." It doesn't appear that it's a list of top places to watch college football, or even a list of the toughest places to play, but staying true to their title, it's a list of places you'd want to visit, catch a game, and see some good college football (that is if the teams representing this list were good, and some of them are not right now!)
Here's their List:
- Knoxville Stadium, University of Tennessee
- Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium, University of Texas
- Husky Stadium, University of Washington
- Folsum Field, University of Colorado
- Memorial Stadium, Clemson University
- Beaver Stadium, Penn State University
- Vaught, Hemmingway Stadium, Ole Miss
- Memorial Stadium, University of Nebraska
- Camp Randall Stadium, University of Wisconsin
Looking at this list, I see a couple of stadiums that made the list more for tailgating and the "event" of a football game rather than the stadium, or quality of football, itself. I'm not sure why you'd want to go out of your way to see an Ole Miss game, but Id bet you're going to have a pretty good time going down there to see it.
Clemson is a small town. There's not much to do there, and the team is a perennial underachiever. I've honestly never understood how people see the rubbing of the rock as one of the greatest football entrances of all time. In fact, the best entrance I've seen from them hasn't been the rubbing of the rock part, it's when an unsuspecting person trips on the way down the hill and causes a pile-up. That being said, I'm not sure they belong on this list.
I also don't agree with the Wisconsin or Washington selections. Sure, I bet you have fun there, but without good football, you're not going to have anything to stand and cheer about. You can have your fun after the game, and if it's that legendary, it will top the list of 10 best places to enjoy AFTER standing and cheering football.
So I can't just complain about the list and not offer any improvements. So I've taken out Clemson, Wisconsin and Washington. Who to replace them with? Well, I'd like to replace Clemson with the University of South Carolina, but fearing obvoius biases, I can't do that. So here are my 3 replacements:
- Mountaineer Field, West Virginia - You have to check out a game here, and if you're lucky, check out a big game. They have one of the most rabid fan bases in the country, and you'll not only have a good time tailgating and watching football, but you might even see a town riot after a big win. Definately on top of the list of 10 places you'd like to have an Army escort after winning a big game.
- Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Home of Florida vs. Georgia The World's Largest Cocktail Party - Neither Georgia nor Florida made the list, so let's combine them. This is a bit of a stretch since it's not a school's stadium, but this is an event you can't miss as a football fan. Sure, Florida AND Georgia fans are both obnoxious, but it's a great game, a great atmosphere, and a great time to be had by all.
- Fields of History: Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame; The Big House, Michigan; the Colliseum, Southern California - Let's bend the rules even more. I'd gladly give up Washington or Wisconsin for a trip to any of these three stadiums. There is tons of history behind all of these schools, and what better way to celebrate great college football than by road-tripping to each of these stadiums?

Ole Miss Revisited....
I was at an engagement party last night talking with some die-hard Gamecock fans. One mentioned that he always goes to away games, so I asked him about his experience this year at Vaught, Hemmingway Stadium. He had nothing but good words to say, adding emphasis on their selection on the list.
His talking points: 1. The people were really friendly and nice, creating a great atmosphere for a tailgate/party. 2. Book your hotel in advance as only 2 hotels exist near campus. Not staying there would greatly impair your experience. 3. Everything is in walking distance and pre & post game activities were excellent and easy to get to. 4. The stadium, although small, is extremely nice.
I guess I owe Ole Miss an appology, as I questioned why they were on the list.
