MLB Trades = Fantasy Opportunities & Problems
Hot off the press, Mark Teixiera has been dealt to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and pitching prospect Stephen Marek. This is just the latest of several big trades going across leagues this year, and with the trade deadline looming just 2 days away, more could come.
Here's a recap of several recent trades, and how they will impact the fantasy landscape:
Mark Teixiera, 1B, Angels - AL only leaguer's rejoice! Finally a big name comes into the AL after several dominant players were traded over to the NL (i.e. Harden & Sabathia). Hope you didn't blow your FAAB budget on Nady! Tex will step in as the Angel's 1B, with some DH time mixed in.
Casey Kotchman, 1B, Braves - Solid player, and a good deal for the Braves to turn Tex into a good 1B they can keep around for a while. Kotchman doesn't have Tex's power, but should be an adequate 1B in Atlanta. Although when you combine this year and last year's trades, you get Salty + Andrus + several other prospects for 1 year of Tex, Kotchman and Marek. Not sure I like that in the long run, but the Braves did a good job here.
Stephen Marek, P, Braves - A starter until recently, he was a top pitching prospect with the Angels. He's exactly what the Braves need: good, young pitching. Don't expect anything from him this year, but he's worth keeping an eye on for next year.
Manny Ramirez, OF/DH, Boston - Boston was rumored to be in the hunt for Tex. But, they would have needed to get rid of Manny for a deal to make sense. Tex's landing in LA means that Manny should be all but off of the trading block. Manny owners can rest assured that a move won't happen now, especially not a move to the NL.
Xavier Nady, OF/DH, Yankees - Kudos to the Pirates for selling high on Nady. Don't expect any sort of jump in stats from Nady's switch to the AL. He'll stay pretty much on pace with where he was, as the ballparks involved are relatively similar. He'll be an adequate OF, and should be rostered in all formats. Perhaps most notable to the Nady deal is the demise of...
Jorge Posada, C/DH, Yankees - As if there was any doubt that Posada could continue on this year, Nady's arrival meant the Yankee captain would be heading under the knife and be out for the rest of the year.
Damaso Marte, P, Yankees - If you had Marte on your roster prior to this trade, you weren't happy when it happened. You just lost a closer. He's now middle/late relief now, with no hope of getting any saves w/ Mo Rivera anchoring the Yanks bullpen. He might be good for holds, but otherwise there's no need to bother.
Jeff Karstens, P, Pirates - Acquired in the Nady trade, Karstens has been called up by the Pirates and will start either Friday or Saturday. Karstens has good potential, and could be a potential streamer candidate.
Ross Ohlendorf, P, Pirates - Also picked up in the Nady trade, Ohlendorf has been good this year, although he's been relegated to he bullpen for most of his time in the majors. In AAA he posted good numbers, including an 18/3 K/BB ratio. Another good pitcher picked up by the Pirates, he could have value in deep leagues from here on out.
Dallas McPhereson, Marlins - Dude is just crushing the ball. He leads professional baseball in home runs. The Marlins are looking to upgrade their catcher, and you'd have to think that McPhereson would be drawing some sort of interest from other teams. But, there's nothing to be found out there regarding him, so I'm just speculating here. Keep an eye on him because he's truly crushing the ball right now (when he's not striking out).
Casey Blake, 3B, Dodgers - Moving from hitter friendly Cleveland to LA isn't a great move for Blake. Neither is the fact that the Dodgers already have good prospects in Andy LaRoche and Blake DeWitt competing for 3B time. But, Blake will slide in as starting 3B, and should be good for the rest of the season. Be warned, though. Torre's done some wierd things this year (i.e. his outfield) so don't be suprised if Blake finds himself behind either LaRoche or DeWitt if he struggles for a while.
Blake DeWitt & Andy LaRoche, 3B, Dodgers - It appears that the Dodgers are just stockpiling third baseman. Sorry if you were hoping one of these two were going to save your season as a second half sleeper. Both are good candidates to be moved before Thursday. They're also good candidates to rot in the minors and never live up to expectations.
